Vlad Tepes was a prince of southern Romania. He died in 1476. "Tepes" means stake, and Vlad had the unpleasant habit of skewering his enemies on spikes. Besides being a mass murderer, he was known as cosmopolitan, as a politician, as a warrior and as an icon of heroism. His family name of Dracula means dragon, and of course Bram Stoker used Vlad as the model for his vampire. The castle in the image was actually owned by Vlad. The sword is a copy of his authentic sword and the medal around his neck is also an authentic copy of coinage during his lifetime.
