The shield is decorated with a black raven (Corvus corax) painted on red leather. The methods and materials used in the construction of Viking shields varied with place and time. This reconstruction is based on known examples. Norse shields, in contrast to those made by other groups were often made from relatively soft woods such as poplar and birch.
