The left hand border is a photo image of bluebonnets, or lupins (Lupinus nootkatensis). Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas. The background image for this design is a blue gingham which matches the color of the lupins. Gingham was a favorite material for making dresses in the pioneer days, providing a connection to the early history of Texas and the American West. Lupinus nootkatensis is a species of bluebonnet which grows in Alaska. Lupins belong to the Pea family, which has two names. The Pea family is called Fabaceae, which is used in the U. S., or Leguminosae. Lupins have flower blossoms similar to sweet peas. Although lupins blossoms can come in many colors, the predominant color on Unalaska Island is the blue and white variety.
