"The Golden Stairs" was painted by Edward Burne, a British artist closely associated with the later part of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He worked closely with William Morris in the decorative arts. He created stain glass art for churches in England. His early paintings show the heavy inspiration of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but later he started to find his own voice in his paintings. He later took up art in the new Esthetic Movement that took place in the Victorian era, but this new movement had an anti-victorian theme emphasizing esthetic values over moral or social themes. His style is summed up by what he wrote to a friend in a letter. Generally, he said he dreamed of pictures that were more romantic and full of light more than anything that ever was or will be... and the forms devinely beautiful...
