The shamrock is one of the ancient symbols of Ireland. It was considered to have mystical powers long before the arrival of St Patrick; its three leaves forming a triad of significance to the Irish Druids.
St Patrick used the shamrock to spread the message of christianity using the three leaves as an anology of the holy trinity. The 'wearing of the green' on special occasions, such as St Patricks Day and weddings, to bring fortune to those who wear a shamrock, continues a tradition that began in the 18th century.
The shamrock is a species of clover, several of which are contenders for the title. Trifolium repens, also known as white clover, is one species that St Patrick most likely used in his storytelling.
In addition to its use as a pasture crop worldwide it's also noted for its medicinal properties, having been used by native american indians to treat fevers and kidney diseases. Thoroughly cooked and served in soups and salads the shamrock is digestible. Clover flour was used for making bread during the Irish Famine.
Apart from the religious significance of the shamrock, contemporary interpretations of the 3 shamrock leaves focus on one for hope ... the second for faith ... and the third for love.
Finding a 4 leaved clover is traditionally accepted as a sign of good luck.
